Exigence is why you write the paper. It is the circumstance or issue that prompts the writer to write. At first I thought exigence was the same as purpose such as to inform or to persuade. However, now I understand that exigence and purpose are two different things. Exigence is why you choose the topic and compelled you to write about it. It is what is asserted in your paper in order for the audience to be aware or make change. What really helped me understand exigence is the professor allowing us to pick our own topic. Being able to pick a topic showed me why I am interested in that topic and passionate enough to write about it.
