Genre

Genre is the type of style in which the author writes in. The different types of genre are poetry, letters, plays, narrative and essays. The type of genre affects the structure of a writing. Some of the genre we covered in class are expository, letter, argumentative, poetry and autobiography. I really struggled understanding genre while writing expository essay before our argumentative topic. The topic I choose for the argumentative essay was about the deforestation of the Amazon forest. I had trouble writing the expository paper because all I knew about the deforestation was about the negative effects of it. My expository essay was very bias and ended up sounding like an argumentative essay. However, as soon as I understood that an expository essay requires research on everything about a topic, explain the topic without a bias, and let the reader pick their own side with the set information. A soon as I understood this, I re-did my essay and wrote about why, how and who gets affected by the deforestation in both negative and positive ways. Just the genre affected what I wrote in my entire essay.
